For Mike Raines, achieving great sound has never been measured by volume – it’s always been defined by the power to turn musical moments into unforgettable experiences and impactful, enduring connections between artists and performers and their audiences. With his debut album Fresh Air, the versatile keyboardist, producer, engineer and production manager begins a long-awaited new chapter, inviting listeners into the same richly textured sonic worlds he has spent a lifetime creating behind the scenes.

Long before he considered releasing an album under his own name, Raines had become the trusted force behind thousands of concerts, recordings and live events, mastering every aspect of entertainment from sound design and recording to lighting, staging and show production. Whether engineering sessions at the legendary Ardent Studios and Royal Studios (with the legendary Willie Mitchell) in Memphis, producing concerts for international touring artists or creating immersive live experiences around the world, he always found his greatest satisfaction bringing other people's visions to life with equal parts technical precision, musical instinct and creative imagination.

Ironically, while helping countless artists realize their dreams, Raines quietly nurtured one of his own. Throughout those years, he was constantly writing. In home studios that evolved alongside every major technological breakthrough—from the earliest MIDI systems to today's sophisticated virtual instruments—he accumulated hundreds of original compositions. Yet despite amassing a catalog of nearly 600 songs, he never imagined becoming the featured artist. His music was simply part of the process, written for future licensing opportunities, other performers or simply for the joy of discovering where inspiration might lead. Having spent decades witnessing the pressures and egos that often accompany life in the spotlight, he found far greater fulfillment creating than seeking recognition.

That perspective finally changed thanks to six people who refused to let his music remain unheard. As the team at his Chicago-based Noize Studios cataloged his extensive body of work, what began as a routine organizational project slowly became an intervention. For nearly six years they challenged Raines' insistence that the music belonged to someone else. Eventually, they stopped asking altogether; they simply reminded him that the artist who had dedicated his career to helping others achieve their musical potential deserved to share his own voice.

Fresh Air is the joyful result of that long-awaited leap. Rather than serving as a showcase for virtuosity alone, the collection reflects Raines' lifelong philosophy that music should first create a feeling before it impresses with technique. He often describes himself not simply as a musician but as a "soundsmith" - someone who shapes frequencies, textures and atmosphere into emotional experiences that encourage listeners to pause, breathe and reconnect with themselves. Blending contemporary jazz with touches of funk, soul, blues, ambient music and pop without ever feeling confined by genre, Fresh Air creates what Raines calls a "sonic sanctuary" - a welcoming musical landscape offering optimism, movement and peace amid life's constant noise.

Throughout every chapter of his remarkable journey, Raines has remained less interested in celebrity than craftsmanship, constantly embracing new technologies, refining his process and expanding his understanding of how sound can transform a performance. Fresh Air represents not a departure from that lifelong mission but its natural culmination: the moment a master producer, engineer and musical architect finally stepped forward to share the deeply personal artistry he had been creating all along.
